The Translational Oncology Program for Scholars (TOPS) is active each summer for Geisel Medical School students. Scholars are recruited for embedded mentored experiences at the nexus of cancer treatment and research. The purpose is to attract and retain future physician-investigators in cancer by providing a deep dive into the challenges and rewards of clinical research.
A selective cohort of Geisel first-year students are chosen for the 6-week paid program each summer. This is a full-time, Monday through Friday commitment at the Cancer Center laboratories and clinics at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center. Each participant is associated with an oncologist or an investigator and a clinical oncology group. Activities include shadowing, laboratory work, tumor board meetings, involvement with the Office of Clinical Research, and getting to know the Cancer Center Shared Resources.
