Research Opportunities for Geisel Medical Students
The Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth is nationally recognized for its strong commitment to teaching, clinical excellence, and a collaborative environment. As a comprehensive research institution, Geisel has seen its research funding more than double over the past decade.
Geisel faculty are leaders in diverse fields such as genetics, bioinformatics, population health, cancer, cystic fibrosis, neuroscience, psychiatry, and health care delivery science, offering students a wide range of research opportunities.
Finding Research Opportunities & Funding Support
Geisel students are encouraged to explore external research opportunities based on their interests in specialty, location, or institution. If you’re looking to spend time in a particular city, consider searching major hospitals in that area—for example, those interested in orthopedics in New York City might explore the Department of Orthopedics at the Hospital for Special Surgery. Students interested in a specific field, such as gastroenterology, can explore medical student research opportunities through professional societies like the American College of Gastroenterology, the American Gastroenterological Association, or the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.
To support your research and scholarly activities, Geisel offers several funding options. Students presenting at conferences may apply for up to $400 per academic year; please note that this funding is reimbursement-based and requires application at least one month in advance. Internal funding opportunities include the Hitchcock Foundation Student Research Award and Dartmouth SYNERGY Levy Incubator Grants, while external grants are also available through national medical societies and disease-specific foundations. For students seeking help with applications, Dartmouth’s Grant Proposal Support Initiative provides valuable grant writing assistance.
Geisel medical students are known for their energy, curiosity, and academic excellence. Their passion for discovery and commitment to improving health are reflected in the many scholarly manuscripts they author each year. From clinical case reports to original research articles, Geisel students consistently contribute to the scientific community, with many of their works featured in respected journals and professional conferences. Their drive and dedication make them valuable contributors to research teams across a wide range of disciplines.
