Geisel students are encouraged to explore external research opportunities based on their interests in specialty, location, or institution. If you’re looking to spend time in a particular city, consider searching major hospitals in that area—for example, those interested in orthopedics in New York City might explore the Department of Orthopedics at the Hospital for Special Surgery. Students interested in a specific field, such as gastroenterology, can explore medical student research opportunities through professional societies like the American College of Gastroenterology, the American Gastroenterological Association, or the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.

To support your research and scholarly activities, Geisel offers several funding options. Students presenting at conferences may apply for up to $400 per academic year; please note that this funding is reimbursement-based and requires application at least one month in advance. Internal funding opportunities include the Hitchcock Foundation Student Research Award and Dartmouth SYNERGY Levy Incubator Grants, while external grants are also available through national medical societies and disease-specific foundations.
