How did working with NH-INBRE help you?

“Working with INBRE is one of, if not the main reason that I am getting a PhD in biomedical research. Going to a smaller school like Plymouth State that is not a large research institution, INBRE allowed me the opportunity to have a hands on research experience and helped instill my desire to pursue my PhD. It was my first immersive experience in hypothesis driven research and that time spent in the lab taught me basic experimental skills, but also what a career in research can look like. I conducted INBRE-funded research the summer going into my senior year of college and continued working in the lab through the school year. I had applied to graduate programs to enter that following fall and was unsuccessful, and it was thanks to my INBRE mentor and PI that I was advised to get a job working in a lab as a laboratory technician to continue getting lab experience and to try the following application cycle. Our INBRE lab had connections with the University of Vermont and had visited the school during our summer in the lab and therefore I knew I liked the university and applied to positions at UVM. I thankfully got a lab tech position and got into the graduate program at UVM the following cycle. I am so thankful for both my INBRE experience and the "gap year" between undergrad and graduate school where I continued gaining hands on research experience.”
