The New Hampshire Summer Undergraduate Research Program in Nursing (ISURF-Nursing) at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center
The NH-INBRE Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship in Nursing at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center provides a 10-week (mid-June to mid-August) research experience for undergraduate nursing students. Selected students will work closely with faculty mentors on research and evidence-based practice projects.
The program is designed to expose students to a wide range of experiences related to clinical and translational research in an academic medical center setting: from proposal development through study implementation and management, to clinical areas where evidence is applied and evaluated at the bedside. It also includes the opportunity to shadow clinical research nurses and advanced practice nurses (nurse practitioners and clinical nurse specialists) in the clinical setting.
This program seeks to expand the capacity for nursing research in New Hampshire. By giving students direct experiences with nurses in clinical and translation research settings during their undergraduate studies, we aim to increase the number of new nurses who choose to incorporate research in their graduate studies or nursing careers.
Designed as an intense immersion experience, students will be closely affiliated with the other students in the Dartmouth ISURF program. As such, in addition to nursing research activities, students will learn strategies for successfully applying to graduate school and discussions of career options. Additional activities to enhance professional development include an interdisciplinary journal club where scientific papers are discussed, and an introduction to bioinformatics through guided discussions and interactive computer modules. There will also be other opportunities to interact with peers and learn about a broad scope of the research taking place at Dartmouth.
Support
Student support includes up to $6,000 in salary, a summer meal plan, and free housing. Support is also provided for all participating nursing students to attend the NH-INBRE Annual Meeting at the end of the summer, with each student doing a poster and/or oral presentation of their summer research.
Eligibility
Students are eligible if they will have completed their Junior year in a Bachelors of Science in Nursing program by May/June of the academic year, attend an NH-INBRE Partner institution, and have a high academic standing. Our primary aim is to expose students to nursing research with the hope of inspiring and preparing the next generation of nurses that pursue research as part of their academic and professional careers. The program is not appropriate for students who simply want to strengthen their clinical skills.
