Internal NH-INBRE grant programs for partner faculty, plus a working list of federal and private funders for biomedical research. Talk to your institution's grants office before submitting anything below.
Internal NH-INBRE Grants
Open to NH-INBRE partner faculty. These are reviewed on a rolling or announced schedule — check each program's FOA for current deadlines.
Developmental Research Project Program (DRPP): Research & Pilot Grants
Support for partner faculty projects at 50% effort (Research Project) or 25% effort (Pilot Project). Either can be run collaboratively — a Collaborative Research Project or Collaborative Pilot Project — with a single PI at an NH-INBRE PUI partner and one co-investigator from a different PUI or a lead institution.
ELIGIBILITY:
New Proposals. Faculty members at a NH-INBRE partner institution whose research interests have biomedical relevance are eligible to apply for new Research or Pilot Project grants. This includes most faculty in the life sciences, including clinical researchers in nursing, as well as some whose proposed studies are in biomedically-relevant areas of environmental science, computer science, chemistry, neuroscience, psychology, and physics.
Renewals. Faculty who are Principal Investigators (PIs) on Research or Pilot Project grants that are currently funded by NH-INBRE who have made substantial progress on their prior Specific Aims are eligible to submit a renewal application to extend their work for one additional year.
Biomedical relevance: Projects should be related to the overall NIH mission to support biomedical research in a rigorous and reproducible manner.
APPLICATION TYPE: Annual, proposals due October 1, 2026
BUDGET: Research Project budgets are capped at $125,000 annually for two years and Pilot Projects budgets are capped at $50,000 for one year.
*Only proposals from faculty selected during the Letter of Intent stage will be considered for funding*

OVERALL RATIONALE: This mechanism is designed for faculty researchers seeking new research results through new/additional experimentation. The ultimate goal is to create impactful preliminary data for new/revised grant applications to INBRE and external/non-INBRE sources, while at the same time jump-starting the collection of results leading to manuscript submissions.
ELIGIBILITY: Faculty engaged in biomedical research are eligible to apply. However, faculty who have received 5 years of funded research and/or pilot grant awards effective June 1, 2026, are eligible to apply only if they are proposing an entirely new research direction or of a substantially new extension of previously performed or proposed work.
APPLICATION TYPE: Annual, next round due Spring 2027
BUDGET: Up to $20K (direct costs) maximum in $1K increments; up to 1.2 summer month PI salary support. Detailed budget required. The award will be directed to lead institute RSTG as a supplement to be used specifically for the Seed Grant: e.g. to support additional student researchers, technicians, supplies, services for shared instrumentation, other research or presentation costs.
View application details →NH-INBRE Targeted Incentive Grant (TIG)
OVERALL RATIONALE: For PIs whose results are far enough along that a defined push of experiments and writing will get them to submission. Supports:
- Manuscripts — especially data-driven papers (reviews considered; not letters to the editor)
- New or revised grant applications to national funders (NIH, NSF, and/or foundations)
ELIGIBILITY: All faculty engaged in biomedical research except those investigators receiving funded pilot or research project awards.
APPLICATION TYPE: Open rolling application, no due date.
BUDGET: Up to $4K for manuscripts; up to $15K for grants; no budget detail required. NO PI or other faculty salary support; no travel; the award will be directed to lead institute RSTG as a supplement to be used specifically for this deliverable: e.g. to support additional student researchers, technicians, supplies, services for shared instrumentation, and other research or presentation costs. Budget maximums do not include F&A. F&A is allowable in addition to the direct costs.
Apply for a Targeted Incentive Grant →Core Service Voucher Program
OVERALL RATIONAL: Based on the scientific scope of NH-INBRE-funded projects, we anticipate considerable Partner use of the CIBBR COBRE and NH-INBRE-associated Hubbard Center for Genome Studies at UNH-D, and the Genomics and Molecular Biology Shared Resource, the Center for Qualitative Biology's Single Cell Genomics and the Genomic Data Science Cores, the Translational Research Core, and the bioMT Molecular Tools Core at Dartmouth. Project Leaders will be charged at internal rates and can apply for Core Vouchers, which are NH-INBRE grants to support shared resource usage. Core vouchers require a 1–2-page experimental justification and plan and are reviewed at any time.
ELIGIBILITY: All faculty engaged in biomedical research from an NH-INBRE Program Network Partner Institution.
APPLICATION TYPE: Open rolling application, no due date.
BUDGET: Up to $5,000 toward shared-resource support at Dartmouth or the University of New Hampshire, Durham.
Apply for a Core Service Voucher →Travel Requests
OVERALL RATIONAL: The New Hampshire IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence (NH‑INBRE) invites RSTG-supported faculty at the NH-INBRE Partner institutions to apply for conference travel support through the Research Student Training Grant (RSTG). This funding opportunity supports faculty participation in professional conferences that advance NH‑INBRE’s mission of strengthening biomedical research capacity and student training.
ELIGIBILITY: Applicants must:
• Be engaged in or supporting NH‑INBRE‑related research, mentoring, or student training activities at an NH-INBRE Partner institution.
• Seek funding for conference attendance that aligns with NH‑INBRE and NIH programmatic goals
APPLICATION TYPE: Open rolling application, Applications must be submitted in advance of the conference and prior to incurring any travel expenses.
BUDGET: Subject to approval and fund availability, allowable expenses may include: • Conference registration fees, • Airfare and ground transportation, • Lodging, • Meals and incidental expenses, consistent with institutional and NIH travel policies
*Late or retroactive requests will not be considered.*
