The Integration of Bioinformatics into a Biology Curriculum

Sequencing microbes as a method of developing core bioinformatics skills while learning basic principles in microbiology, genetics, ecology and evolution.

The goal is to engage large numbers of undergraduate students in authentic scientific discovery using modern tools of genetics and bioinformatics.  The specific experience involves the culturing of microbes and their characterization by genome sequencing.  This process engages the students in core principles of microbiology, genetics, and cell biology while providing a substantial introduction to core skills in bioinformatics.

Outline of proposed module (very flexible)

  • Microbiology
  • Collect and isolate pure cultures of bacteria or phage of choice
  • Document and Biobank
  • Molecular Biology
  • Extract DNA using a standard kit
  • Submit DNA sample to the NH-INBRE core (HCGS).
  • You receive a “Big Data” file of sequences for each student’s sample
  • Bioinformatics
  • Establish fundamental BASH/Command line skills
  • Walk through the steps of analysis.
  • Data QC_Genome Assembly_Genome Annotation_Genome Comparison

Because the window video player does not support other formats we suggest that faculty and students download VLC from the link below.  It is free and open source. https://www.videolan.org/vlc/
