Research Support and Training

Beyond direct grants to individual faculty, NH-INBRE funds a Research Support and Training Grant (RSTG) at each Partner institution and runs a set of shared programs — from start-up funding and core facility access to postdoctoral teaching and travel support — open to researchers across the Partner and Lead (Dartmouth, UNH) network.

Funding & Start-up Support

Direct financial support for researchers building a new program or bringing research into their teaching.

New Faculty Start-up

NH-INBRE matches institutional start-up funding 50:50, up to $25,000, for newly recruited faculty pursuing biomedical research aligned with our program themes. The program has since been expanded to cover existing faculty who are new to biomedical research.

Shared Infrastructure & Resources

Facilities, expertise, and equipment available to all Partner researchers at no cost.

Shared Resources for Partner Researchers

Research cores at Dartmouth and UNH house sophisticated equipment and specialized technical staff, and all Partner institutions have access to them. A Shared Core Voucher program helps support the cost of these core services.

Dartmouth Library Access

Partners get free access to the Dartmouth libraries and their online journal subscriptions — essential for keeping up with the scientific literature. Access requires a Dartmouth NetID.*

Biostatistics Support

The NH-INBRE Data Science Core provides PhD biostatisticians for research design, data analysis, and presentation. NH-INBRE currently funds a senior biostatistician dedicated to supporting INBRE projects.

NH-INBRE Used Equipment Exchange and Loan Program

The "NH-INBRE Exchange" collects used lab equipment at Dartmouth and redistributes it to Partners free of charge, on an exchange or long-term loan basis. The Facilities Office handles storage, the Machine Shop handles repairs and reconditioning, and EHS certifies items for safe use. Available equipment and supplies are advertised through the NH-INBRE listserv as items become available.

Teaching & Training

Programs that build teaching skill and research experience into the classroom, for postdocs, faculty, and undergraduates alike.

Workshops

Hands-on, small-group sessions for students and faculty at Partner and Lead institutions, focused on the theoretical and practical sides of modern experimental techniques that NH-INBRE members want to bring into their own research.

Hybrid Research/Teaching Postdoc Program

Postdocs split their time 50/50 between research, funded by NH-INBRE, and teaching, funded by the Partner institution. The mentoring faculty member must have at least two more years of research funding remaining. Hybrid postdocs conduct research alongside their mentor and help teach part of the mentor's course load.

Research- and Inquiry-Based Lab Modules

Newly developed lab modules, built into life-science courses, give undergraduates hands-on exposure to modern research techniques and inquiry-based lab work.

Events, Travel & Networking

Support for the seminars, symposia, and meetings that connect NH-INBRE researchers to each other and the wider field.

Research Seminars

NH-INBRE supports invited speakers — from Partner institutions, Lead institutions, or beyond the network — who present their research. Past speakers have included Nobel laureates, invited for institution-wide symposia open to the public.

Undergraduate Research Symposia & Career Days

NH-INBRE encourages Partner institutions to hold symposia showcasing student research, raising the visibility of research on campus and creating networking opportunities. Poster and talk sessions often include invited keynote speakers alongside undergraduate researchers from neighboring Partner institutions.

Attendance at Scientific Meetings and Research Retreats

Travel, lodging, and registration support is available for students and faculty attending state, regional, and national meetings, as well as research symposia and retreats at the Lead institutions — including the NH-INBRE annual statewide meeting and regional or national INBRE/IDeA meetings. These events offer valuable networking opportunities and keep researchers current on the latest advances.
