Geisel School of Medicine Dean Duane A. Compton, PhD, has appointed Susan B. Roberts, PhD, as the medical school’s Senior Associate Dean of Foundational Research. Roberts is an internationally known nutrition and behavioral change scientist with more than 30 years of experience developing innovative research programs to advance health in the U.S. and abroad.

Michael B. Sporn, MD, a visionary cancer researcher with an unorthodox approach to cancer treatment who was a professor emeritus of pharmacology and toxicology at Geisel School of Medicine, died on Sept. 29. He was 89.
Sonia Nagy Chimienti, MD, has been named the new Senior Associate Dean for Medical Education for Dartmouth’s Geisel School of Medicine. She is a specialist in infectious disease who is currently vice provost for Student Life and Enrollment Management and an associate professor of medicine at the University of Massachusetts Medical School.

Prachee Avasthi, PhD, an associate professor of biochemistry and cell biology at Dartmouth’s Geisel School of Medicine and one of the medical school’s newest faculty members, has received the 2020 Women in Cell Biology Junior Award for Excellence in Research from the American Society for Cell Biology (ASCB).
Susan Harper MED ’84, died on Wednesday, January 29 in Hanover, NH. Harper served as an assistant dean for medical education and residency advisor at Geisel until 2018. For nearly 30 years she guided medical students through an often-stressful process of moving from medical school to residency.
Nicole J. Borges, PhD, a professor of neurobiology and anatomical sciences at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, has been named Chair of the Department of Medical Education at Dartmouth’s Geisel School of Medicine. Borges, a health psychologist with over 20 years of experience in medical education, is recognized nationally for her scholarly approaches to student and faculty advancement.
Returning from a recent trip to his native Spain, 89-year-old Emeritus Professor Miguel Marin-Padilla made a surprising decision—after nearly 60 years in academic medicine and more than 190 scientific publications, it was time to leave science behind. “It is time for me to close that door and let young people move the field forward,” he says.
