Almost 1 million children in the U.S. live in areas (often rural) where there is no local primary care physician. Meanwhile, many urban areas have abundant primary care physicians - an average of one physician for every 140 children in some locations.

Rural Moms Perceive Specific Barriers to Physical Activity, Dartmouth Study Finds
A new study from Dartmouth-Hitchcock Norris Cotton Cancer Center found that rural mothers perceive specific internal barriers to being adequately physically active. Physical activity is a key ingredient in maintaining a healthy lifestyle and preventing excessive weight gain, factors that can significantly reduce cancer risk.
Nearly One Third of Medicare Patients with Advanced Cancer Die in Hospitals and ICUs; About Half Get Hospice Care
Whether Medicare patients with advanced cancer will die while receiving hospice care or in the hospital varies markedly depending on where they live and receive care, according to the Dartmouth Atlas Project's first-ever report on cancer care at the end of life. The researchers found no consistent pattern of care or evidence that treatment patterns follow patient preferences, even among the nation's leading academic medical centers.

Ethan Dmitrovsky, MD, a professor at Dartmouth Medical School and a leader at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Norris Cotton Cancer Center, is the new chair of the influential National Cancer Institute (NCI) Board of Scientific Counselors for Clinical Sciences and Epidemiology. Dr. Dmitrovsky will guide the 22-member Board of physicians and scientists from cancer centers and universities around the country as it advises the director of the NCI and its scientific leadership on the progress and future direction of cancer-related research programs.

New Dartmouth researcher identifies race disparities in colorectal cancer deaths
A new study published by a team led by Samir Soneji, Ph.D., an assistant professor at The Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice (TDI) and Dartmouth's Norris Cotton Cancer Center, shows that disparities in mortality rates from colorectal cancer due to racial differences increased from 1960 through 2005, even as the overall colorectal cancer mortality rate declined in the same period.

DMS mourns former Dean McCollum
Renowned epidemiologist Robert W. McCollum, M.D., who in 8½ years as dean of Dartmouth Medical School (DMS) helped pave the way for the evolution of Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center (DHMC) to national recognition as an academic medical center, died at his home in Etna, N.H. on Monday, September 13, 2010, after a long illness. He was the husband of psychotherapist and author Audrey McCollum.

Dartmouth researchers are reporting that African-American and white cancer patients die at roughly the same rate after undergoing treatment at specialized-care institutions. The findings, appearing in the online version of the American Cancer Society journal Cancer, suggest that where patients receive care may partly explain racial disparities in cancer mortality that previous studies showed.

New vaccine effective against TB in African HIV patients
Investigators from Dartmouth Medical School (DMS) have reported results of a clinical trial showing that a new vaccine against tuberculosis, Mycobacterium vaccae (MV), is effective in preventing tuberculosis in people with HIV infection. The DarDar Health Study, named for Dartmouth and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, found that MV immunization reduced the rate of definite tuberculosis by 39 percent among 2,000 HIV-infected patients in Tanzania.
