On Match Day, thousands of fourth-year medical students across the U.S., along with families and friends, learned where they will start their residency training after graduation. For medical students, the annual event is one of the most anticipated, exciting, and emotional days of their medical education.
This year, 100 graduating students at Dartmouth's Geisel School of Medicine joined a record high 38,376 U.S. and international medical students and graduates vying for 35,185 residency positions, the most ever offered in the national Match.
“We are all very proud of our students, who have worked hard to achieve this milestone, and are excited to see them matching into some of the top residency training programs in the country,” says Duane Compton, PhD, dean of the Geisel School of Medicine. “I'm equally proud of the faculty and staff who dedicate themselves to helping our students reach their goals."
Medical students submit their residency choices via a computer program managed by the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP)—residency programs also submit lists of applicants in order of preference. The lists are then compared against each other utilizing the NRMP’s computer algorithm, matching students to their residency program.
Primary care was once again the most popular specialty choice among Geisel students with 51 choosing residencies in family medicine, internal medicine, internal medicine-primary care, medicine-pediatrics, or pediatrics. General surgery and obstetrics-gynecology were the next most popular specialties. This year, California was the most popular destination for Geisel students, followed by Massachusetts and New York.
Members of Geisel’s class of 2019 will start their residencies at some of the most prestigious programs in the U.S., including Harvard/Brigham & Women’s Hospital, Cleveland Clinic, University of California San Francisco, Johns Hopkins Hospital, UCLA Medical Center, Yale-New Haven Hospital, Mayo Clinic, Children’s Hospital-Philadelphia, BI Deaconess Medical Center, Duke University Medical Center, and others.
