Geisel Receives Fogarty Grant to Fund Research Collaboration in East Africa

The Geisel School of Medicine has been awarded a 5-year, $1.5 million grant from the Fogarty International Center at the National Institutes of Health to support an infectious disease research and training program to combat HIV and tuberculosis (TB) within the newly established Infectious Disease Institute at Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS) in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

The Next Generation of Surgeon Investigators: Surgical Trainees Answer Tough Questions Facing Surgeons and Patients

How do we define “competence” in surgical consultation? What factors lead to overuse of invasive screening tests in low-risk patients with bladder cancer? These were some of the questions asked by the fifteen young surgical investigators from the Geisel School of Medicine and Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center at the sixth annual STARS (Surgical Trainees Advancing Research Symposium) event on April 12-13. Sponsored by the Department of Surgery, the two-day event promotes interest in surgical health services research among young and aspiring surgeons through a spirited but supportive competition.

James Bliska to Lead Dartmouth Cystic Fibrosis Research Cluster

Noted molecular biologist James Bliska, PhD, is joining the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth as a Distinguished Professor in Microbiology and Immunology and senior lead faculty member of the Personalized Treatments for Cystic Fibrosis (CF) Cluster, a cross-Dartmouth group of investigators established to develop innovative, personalized medicine and treatments for CF and lung infections caused by opportunistic pathogens.

This year’s Gear Up for Research will be held Monday, October 30th, from 11:00 AM- 1:00 PM, in Auditoria A-C at DHMC. Gear Up is an information fair that brings together entities that support research at Dartmouth and DHMC. It is here that researchers including faculty, residents, nurses, students, and postdocs, have the opportunity to learn about services, meet key people, ask questions, and get answers.
