Geisel Student Government hosted the third annual White Coat and Gavel Games on Aug. 29, bringing together more than 200 participants from Geisel, the University of Vermont School of Medicine, and Vermont Law and Graduate School for a spirited day of competition.
The American Society for Cell Biology (ASCB) and its research journal, Molecular Biology of the Cell (MBoC), Paper of the Year Award recognizes the outstanding scientific achievements of early career researchers.
For their exceptional contributions to the field of cell biology, this year’s MBoC Paper of the Year Award went to Geisel School of Medicine researchers Gregory J. Schwarz and Jennifer Landino for their paper “Membrane composition-dependent patterning of Rho and F-actin in an artificial cell cortex”.
August Medical Student Grand Rounds at DHMC featured two Geisel School of Medicine students who shared their research: a study that tested whether axillary lymph node dissection for breast cancer patients with more than 2 positive sentinel nodes at surgery could safely be omitted, and an examination of whether administering extended-release buprenorphine too deeply may raise concern for injection into muscle, potentially affecting medication absorption and increasing the risk of local complications.
The Geisel School of Medicine has welcomed new students from the medical, Master of Public Health (residential and hybrid), and Health Care Research MS programs to the medical school community. For many, this marked their first steps into the medical and healthcare professions.

Gretchen Carpenter MED’29 and Raymond Huang MED’29 are among 100 medical students from across the U.S. selected to participate in the AAMC’s summer leadership program RISE: Developing Future Leaders in Academic Medicine and Science for Rising Second Year Medical Students. James C. Strickler, MD (D’50 DMS’51), dean emeritus and active emeritus professor of medicine and of community and family medicine at Geisel School of Medicine, died on June 27 at age 99.
