Three Geisel Students Receive Prestigious Public Health Service Award
Given to medical students in recognition of their commitment to helping address public health issues in their community,the nationally competitive U.S. Public Health Service Excellence in Public Health Award rewards visionary medical students who are advancing initiatives to improve social justice. Second-year Geisel students Sarah Kovan ’22, Sam Tsai ’22, and Isabelle Yang ’22, are this year’s recipients of theprestigious award.

Rachel Solotaroff MED ’01 Receives Dartmouth Social Justice Award
Alumna Rachel Solotaroff MED ’01 will receive the 2020 Martin Luther King Jr. Social Justice Award for Ongoing Commitment in recognition of her work with Central City Concern, a Portland, Ore., organization serving adults and families who are affected by homelessness, poverty, and addictions.
Gerber Named the Inaugural Kenneth E. and Carol L. Weg Distinguished Professor
Scott A. Gerber, PhD, professor of molecular and systems biology and of biochemistry and cell biology at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth, and program director of the Cancer Biology and Therapeutics Research Program at Dartmouth’s Norris Cotton Cancer Center, has been named the Kenneth E. and Carol L. Weg Distinguished Professor.
Geisel Student Sylvia Guerra Receives AAMC Nickens Scholarship
Sylvia Guerra ’21 is one of five U.S. medical students to receive the prestigious 2019 Herbert W. Nickens Medical Student Scholarship award from the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC).
Five Geisel Faculty Win National Healthcare Delivery Award
Bonny Whalen, MD, Steve Chapman, MD, Alison Holmes, MD, Julia Frew, MD (MED ’05), and Daisy Goodman, DNP, MPH (TDI ’14), received the Academic Pediatric Association’s (APA) Health Care Delivery award for their work with mothers and newborns with opioid dependence. The award acknowledges innovative and effective programs that provide healthcare in the context of a teaching setting involving medical students and/or residents.
National Alliance on Mental Illness Recognizes Geisel’s William Torrey
William C. Torrey, MD, has been named the 2019 Exemplary Psychiatrist by the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI)—the nation’s largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to building better lives for those affected by mental illness.
Geisel Professor Receives Tow Humanism in Medicine Award
Patricia T. Glowa, MD, an assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology, of pediatrics, and of community and family medicine, has received the Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award.
Nine Geisel School of Medicine Students Named Schweitzer Fellows
As part of the 2019-20 class of New Hampshire/Vermont Schweitzer Fellows, nine Geisel medical students will spend the next year learning to address social factors affecting community health while developing lifelong leadership skills in the process.
