Aligned with Geisel School of Medicine’s One Geisel vision, the newly revised Office of Student Life (formerly the Office of Student Affairs that supported medical students) offers expanded, integrated support for all MD, MPH, and MS students enrolled in the medical school’s programs to foster an inclusive, collaborative peer-learning community.
Geisel School of Medicine’s White Coat ceremony was held in Dartmouth’s Rollins Chapel on Friday, September 27 where the medical students of the Class of 2028 received their short white coats, an iconic symbol of their status as physicians in training.
Over the course of a weekend in mid-September, Geisel School of Medicine hosted for the first time the National Leadership Institute (NLI)—a triannual meeting of the Student National Medical Association (SNMA) and its National Minority Association of Pre-Medical Students (MAPS)— to foster community through networking and workshops.

Geisel biomedical illustrator Vinald Francis, invited to discuss his work at a graphic conference in Ireland, also talked about his collaboration with Dartmouth’s Shontay Delalue about a comic highlighting the historical medical exploitation of Black women, illustrating how this visual medium can effectively convey complex healthcare issues and address health disparities.
This week the Geisel School of Medicine welcomed 97 students in its residential and hybrid Master of Public Health (MPH) and Master of Science in Healthcare Research (MS) programs to an intensive learning week packed with information sessions, team-building activities, and social gatherings designed to familiarize the students with Dartmouth’s campus and foster interpersonal relationships.
Congratulations to Kali Smolen, MD-PhD’26, who is one of four emerging clinical health leaders nationally to be awarded the Blair and Georgia Sadler Fellowship at Health Care Without Harm for their commitment to working toward equitable, climate-smart healthcare in their institutions and communities.
Congratulations to Nena Mason, PhD, assistant professor of medical education at Geisel, who has received the 2024 NEGEA Innovation in Medical Education Award for “Exploiting a Missed Opportunity in Undergraduate Medical Education: Developing Ultrasound-Guidance and Needle-Based Procedure skills in Medical Students.”
