Nicole Borges Reappointed as Chair of Medical Education

Nicole Borges, PhD, chair of medical education and the Edward Tulloh Krumm Professor of Medical Education at Geisel School of Medicine, has been reappointed by Dean Duane Compton, PhD, to a second five-year term as chair of the Department of Medical Education.

Since its founding in 2016, the department’s mission has been to develop and engage teaching faculty in achieving educational excellence through creativity, collaboration, and scholarship.

“Training the next generation of physicians is an honor and I am grateful for Dean Compton’s partnership in building this department—working alongside him has been a remarkable and rewarding experience,” Borges says.

“Through strategic planning, we have strengthened our department’s identity and created an academic home for medical educators, scholars, and educational specialists that aligns with our school’s mission and needs.”

This ethos supports Geisel’s community of educators and enhances cooperative interaction leading to innovative medical education experiences, educational scholarship, and resources for medical educator faculty development and research productivity. Strong collaborative partnerships with Geisel’s Office of Educational Affairs, the school’s foundational and clinical departments, as well as those at Dartmouth Health, are key to the department’s success.

“I’m very pleased that Dr. Borges will continue to lead our department of medical education,” Compton says. “She has been outstanding in leading the strategic plan of the department and has successfully recruited new faculty and supported faculty promotions.”

Under Borges’ mission forward leadership, department faculty are recognized nationally, regionally, and locally for their expertise and accomplishments as educators and researchers in academic medicine. And Borges, a health psychologist with more than 25 years of experience in medical education, recently received the Association of American Medical Colleges Group on Educational Affairs Merrell Flair Award in Medical Education for her contributions to medical education research, scholarship, and the medical education community.

On the home front, Geisel recognizes department faculty for their excellence in teaching and scholarship with annual awards, such as distinguished lecturer, best pre-clinical educator, and faculty awards for those who prioritize a culture of respect and care while advancing the mission of the school through their work with students.

“Through strategic planning, we have strengthened our department’s identity and created an academic home for medical educators, scholars, and educational specialists that aligns with our school’s mission and needs.”

With a reputation for innovation and scholarship, deans, medical education senior leadership, and department chairs of other medical schools have reached out to Borges and Compton inviting them to share more about the Department of Medical Education’s mission, structure, and function.

“Our vision of becoming a model for advancing educational excellence and scholarship has become a reality,” Borges says. “While fully engaged with and supporting the education of medical students, we continually look for future opportunities to expand our record of educational excellence.

“I am proud of our faculty and staff and deeply grateful for their commitment to our medical students and to the department’s mission.”
