Educating the Complete Physician

“The art of communicating deeply with the patient is the fundamental of a good physician,” says Roshini Pinto-Powell, MD, associate dean for student affairs. But while the doctor-patient relationship remains at the heart of medicine, physicians today must also work effectively within interprofessional teams, manage the health of diverse populations, and continuously improve the systems in which they work. That ethos is reflected in every class of students at Geisel and in the MD curriculum.

Year after year, residency directors nationwide remark on Geisel graduates’ clinical preparedness, their understanding of healthcare delivery, their readiness to engage in quality improvement initiatives, and their ability to think holistically about their patients.

“We have tailored our curriculum in a way that ensures our students graduate with the ability to think deeply and critically about individual patients and about systems of care,” says Pinto-Powell. “It’s gratifying to see them go on to practice and teach in the way they were taught, influencing their colleagues and patients. The impact is exponential.”

Through the Interaction campaign, launched in 2018, Geisel aims to attract $45 million in philanthropic gifts to student scholarships and programming that supports educating the complete physician. Learn more at geiselmed.dartmouth.edu/campaign.
