On Thursday, September 4, Dartmouth’s Geisel School of Medicine held its first-ever Medical Student Research Fair to support and expand research opportunities for medical students.
Held at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, the event gave students the chance to connect directly with faculty and representatives from several departments at Geisel and Dartmouth Health to explore research interests, potential projects, and mentorship opportunities.
Designed primarily for first- and second-year medical students to learn about research opportunities early in their medical education, the fair was also open to third- and fourth-year students who wish to expand their research experience and build new collaborations.

“We’re very pleased with the turnout and strong interest generated by the event,” says Han Naung Tun, MBBS, MPH, a program specialist with Geisel’s Medical Student Research Program who helped organize the event. “Our newly launched Office of Medical Student Research has been fully engaged in supporting students through every step of their research journey. This includes guiding them through research navigation, onboarding, IRB requirements, resource sharing, research advising, and direct connections with faculty and sponsoring PIs across departments.”
Reflecting on his participation in the event, Michael Zhang MED’28 says, “Attending the fair was inspiring. It was wonderful to see so many classmates engage with research opportunities and to have providers generously share their time and expertise.”
Zhang adds, “The event made research feel far more approachable, lowering the entry barrier for students who may be less comfortable with it at the start. Having this fair early in the year is especially valuable, as it sets the stage for students to begin medical school with strong research connections and momentum.”
