John E. (Jack) Wennberg, MD, MPH, founder and director emeritus of The Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice, the Peggy Y. Thomson Professor in the Evaluative Clinical Sciences Emeritus at the Geisel School of Medicine, and founding editor of the Dartmouth Atlas of Health Care, died March 10, 2024. He was 89 years old.
Michael B. Sporn, MD, a visionary cancer researcher with an unorthodox approach to cancer treatment who was a professor emeritus of pharmacology and toxicology at Geisel School of Medicine, died on Sept. 29. He was 89.
Vincent A. Memoli, MD, emeritus professor of pathology and laboratory medicine, passed away at home on July 12. Dr. Memoli joined Dartmouth-Hitchcock and Dartmouth in 1983, and continued to teach after his retirement in 2017.
Joseph Willard Inselburg, MD, professor emeritus of microbiology and immunology at Geisel School of Medicine, died February 29. He was 82 years old. His research career at Dartmouth’s medical school spanned 34 years.
Susan Harper MED ’84, died on Wednesday, January 29 in Hanover, NH. Harper served as an assistant dean for medical education and residency advisor at Geisel until 2018. For nearly 30 years she guided medical students through an often-stressful process of moving from medical school to residency.
Heinz Valtin, MD, emeritus professor of physiology, died at his home in Alexandria, VA, on October 11. Valtin joined the Physiology Department of Dartmouth Medical School (now Geisel School of Medicine) in 1957, eventually holding two honorary chairs, including the Andrew C. Vail Memorial Professor of Physiology, and was chair of the department from 1977–1988.
Elmer R. Pfefferkorn, PhD, emeritus professor of microbiology and immunology, and chair of the department from 1980-1992, died on March 25, 2019. He was 87 years old.
Services will held for Roger P. Smith, PhD, at the Church of Christ at Dartmouth College on Saturday, June 23, at 11:00 AM. Smith, the Irene Heinz Given Professor of Pharmacology Emeritus at the Geisel School of Medicine, died January 22, 2018.
Ben Barres, MD, PhD MED ’79, an internationally renowned neuroscientist and outspoken advocate for equality and inclusion in science, died December 27, 2017 in Palo Alto, CA.
