In his new book The Truth in Small Doses, journalist Clifton Leaf takes a long and critical look at the war on cancer. Part of his critique stems from the research of Michael Sporn, a professor of pharmacology and toxicology and of medicine at the Geisel School of Medicine, who for years has advocated for an unorthodox approach to addressing cancer. In an excerpt from his book reprinted in the winter 2014 issue of Dartmouth Medicine, Leaf discusses how his encounters with Sporn made him rethink how best to battle cancer.
