I am pleased to announce that Frederick “Erick” Lansigan, MD, associate professor of medicine and of dermatology, has agreed to serve as our Interim Associate Dean for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (ADDEI). In this role, Dr. Lansigan will oversee Geisel’s Office of Diversity, Inclusion, and Community Engagement (DICE) and will work closely with leadership at the medical school, Dartmouth College, Dartmouth-Hitchcock, the VA Medical Center, and the Guarini School of Graduate and Advanced Studies, as well as Geisel’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee, to support our school’s continuing efforts to build a diverse and inclusive community of students, residents, postdocs, staff, and faculty.
As Dartmouth welcomes more than half of the undergraduate student body back to campus this week, we want to be clear on Geisel’s policy regarding the resumption of undergraduate research activities in our laboratories.
We want to echo President Hanlon’s statement condemning the violence in the Atlanta area, which left eight people dead, including seven women, six of whom were of Asian descent. While this tragic event is still being investigated, we do know that throughout the pandemic, there has been a significant increase in violence and racism against Asians and the Asian American/Pacific Islander (AAPI) community in the United States. We must also recognize that violence against women is a serious ongoing problem in this country.

As we begin a new academic year, it is important to acknowledge and celebrate the recent promotions of our faculty and research scientists. We hope that you, like all of us on departmental promotions committees, the Dean’s Office, and the APT Committee, are also amazed at the breadth and depth of accomplishments in teaching, clinical care, research, scholarship, and engagement of our academic community.
I would like to thank the many people who volunteered or provided nominations for membership on the new Geisel Committee on Diversity, Equity & Inclusion. The response that we received was exceptional from staff, students and faculty, and there were far more nominations/volunteers than we could accommodate on the initial committee composition.
I’m excited to share the good news that the government has decided to rescind their recently announced policy that would have barred international students taking online-only courses from residing in the United States. The speed at which the government rescinded this unjust and arbitrary policy in the face of legal action highlights just how indefensible it was. I’m pleased that Dartmouth supported this fight to protect our students and learning environment.

We should all consider the following: What would it mean for Geisel to be a national leader in racial fairness, equity, and justice in all of our missions of science and education? How might we get there? We cannot speed to quick fixes aimed to placate that are not long-term solutions, but we can commit, from this point forward, to working towards this vision as a priority for our school.
