DMS Graduates Honored

Hanover, NH -- Award-winning novelist and screenwriter John Winslow Irving addressed the Dartmouth Medical School graduating students and guests at the 2000 class day and awards ceremony Saturday, June 10.

Also speaking were medical student M. Adrian Rossi and graduate student Jonathan C. Cruz.

The celebration recognized almost 100 students who were awarded degrees at Dartmouth College commencement ceremonies Sunday, June 11: 61 received the MD, seven received a PhD in the life sciences; and 26 received degrees in the clinical evaluative sciences, one PhD and 25 master1s.

Dr. John Baldwin, DMS dean, and Dr. David Nierenberg, associate dean for medical education, presented student honors. Dean's Medal for best overall medical student achievement was awarded to Christine Lynn Mackey; the John W. Strohbehn Medal for Excellence in Biomedical Research was presented to Ronald C. Kaltreider, pharmacology and toxicology PhD recipient; the Good Physician Award went to Joseph A. Vitterito II.

Additional medical school awards were given at a luncheon (Thursday, June 8). They included Douglas P. Zipes, M.D., Research Prize in Medicine: Karleyton Conroy Evans Jr.; John and Sophia Zaslow Prize: Leah von Reyn Cream; Saul Blatman Award for Excellence in Maternal and Child Health: Christine Lynn Mackey; Janet M. Glasgow Achievement Citations: Christine Lynn Mackey and Elisa Thompson Ruksznis; Healthcare Foundation of New Jersey Humanism in Medicine Award: Elizabeth Kellogg Wolfe; Hilda Weyl Sokol Award: Jennifer Elizabeth Eggers; Julian and Melba Jarrett Memorial Prize: Michael Betsy; Merck Manual Awards: Allison Jill Fegley and Travis Hewett Matheney; New England Pediatric Society Award: Betsy Sandberg Liolios; John F. Radebaugh Community Service Award: Kristine Marie Parke.

Other department awards were Frederic P. Lord Award in Anatomy: Vladimir Grigoryants; French Distinguished Student Award in Pathology: Thomas Joseph Golembeski; Arthur Naitove Surgical Scholar Award: Vladimir Grigoryants; Excellence in Clinical Psychiatry: Karleyton Conroy Evans Jr; Excellence in Radiology: Nepenthe Irwin Fong; Medicine: Christine Lynn Mackey; Anesthesiology Outstanding Graduating Student: Carlos J. Cream; Rolf C. Syvertsen Fellow: Derek Thomas Woodrum.

The new Dartmouth Medical School physicians will continue their training in generalist and specialty areas across the nation; 26 will remain in New England. Ninety percent of those who participated in the National Resident Match Program secured one of their top three residency assignment choices.

Faculty honored by the medical school class were: Dr. William Mosenthal, professor of anatomy and of clinical surgery, emeritus: Basic Science Teaching Award; Drs. David Nierenberg, Edward Tulloh Krumm Professor, and Deborah Peltier, assistant professor of medicine and of commuinity and family medicine: Clinical Science Teaching Award; and Dr. Patrick Ting: Thomas P. Almy Housestaff Teaching Award. Dr. Joseph F. O1Donnell, senior advising dean and professor of medicine, was faculty recipient of the Healthcare Foundation of New Jersey Humanism in Medicine Award.
