Description: The Cardiac Surgery service is composed of a multidisciplinary team of 4 attending surgeons, 3 physician assistants, 2 Nurse Practitioners, occasional surgical housestaff and a dedicated group of ICU and Ward nursing staff. We perform about 500-600 major cardiac procedures over the course of a year. This rotation offers extensive exposure to cardiovascular and pulmonary physiology, ICU medicine, inpatient management of complex multisystem diseases and provides an introduction to operating room management of cardiac surgery patients. The service also has a very active outpatient population for the followup of cardiac diseases as well as the pre-operative evaluation and consultation for many of these problems. Students will be expected to participate actively in the inpatient care of the patients as well as see patients in the outpatient setting. The inpatient experience will include following patients from the OR, CVCC, to the ward and ultimately home. Students will get exposed to the full range of cardiac disease, including congenital heart disease. The rotation is designed for the student to work directly with the attending surgeons in clinic and the OR. There is a significant opportunity for exposure to critical care and the anesthetic care of the cardiac surgery patient.
