Description: Pediatric general and thoracic surgery provides the full range of "true" general surgery, including the full range of general and thoracic surgery procedures in the pediatric population from prenatal consultation and neonatal surgical patients through young adults. This includes the treatment of congenital malformations, discussions of fetal management, childhood malignancy, surgical diseases specific to children, diseases of the intestine, colon and rectum, minimally invasive surgery and pediatric trauma. There is particular focus on the understanding of the embryologic and anatomic influence, as well as the physiologic impact of age on medical and surgical management of diseases at all ages. Participation in both outpatient and inpatient activities including clinic in evaluating surgical problems in the pediatric population.

Other Learning Opportunities: Students will participate in didactic sessions specifically on pediatric surgery, as well as participation in conferences, including pediatric tumor board and pediatric trauma.

Dress Code: During the week attire should be a clean white coat, tie and professional dress. During the evening and week-end hours more casual dress is acceptable.
Equipment/Texts: "Essentials of General Surgery" by Lawrence will be provided as required reqding for didactic studies. It is recommended to read 20 pages per night during the Surgery Clerkship rotations.
