Anna N.A. Tosteson, ScD

Lebanon, N.H.—Anna N.A. Tosteson, ScD, has been appointed the James J. Carroll Professor in Oncology at the Norris Cotton Cancer Center and the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth. The chair is awarded to a faculty member nationally recognized for a commitment to work at the leading edge of cancer research, an inspiring educator, a supportive mentor, and an astute and judicious institutional leader.

"Dr. Tosteson has brought discernment and keen insight to her leadership in population sciences and in particular to the enrichment of our efforts in comparative effectiveness research," Norris Cotton Cancer Center Director Mark Israel said in announcing the appointment.

Dr. Tosteson's research addresses clinical and health policy issues in cancer and musculoskeletal diseases through decision-analytic modeling, economic evaluation, and health services research. She is an active participant in national and international groups that focus on the economic evaluation of both new and established health care technologies. Her methodological interests include decision-analytic modeling, comparative effectiveness research, and statistical methods for diagnostic technology assessment.

At Norris Cotton Cancer Center, she directs the Office of Cancer Comparative Effectiveness Research and co-directs the Cancer Control Research Program. She is a senior faculty member of The Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy & Clinical Practice, where she directs the Comparative Effectiveness Research Program and the affiliated Multidisciplinary Clinical Research Center in Musculosekeletal Diseases. She is also associate director, SYNERGY, Dartmouth's Center for Translational Science.

She received a ScD in Biostatistics (Health Decision Science) and MS in Biostatistics from Harvard University, and a BS in Statistics and Biometry from Cornell University.

The James J. Carroll Professor professorial chair at Geisel Medical School was established by the The Samuel Roberts Noble Foundation in 1979, in memory of 1948 Dartmouth graduate James J. Carroll. Carroll, a 1949 graduate of the Tuck School of Business Administration, served as senior investment advisor to the Noble Foundation, and for Noble Affiliates, for 20 years before he died of cancer in 1975.
