Charles Mannix Named Chief Operating Officer

HANOVER, NH--Charles Mannix, an experienced administrator in medical education, has been appointed the new associate dean and chief operating officer of Dartmouth Medical School effective April 1. He succeeds Adam Keller who was named executive vice president for finance and administration for Dartmouth College in July 2003. Previously, Mannix was the vice-president for executive affairs for the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS) Bethesda, Maryland.

"I am delighted that Charlie is bringing his talent and knowledge here to Dartmouth Medical School," said DMS Dean Stephen P. Spielberg, MD, PhD. "He brings a wealth of experience to this position and his leadership will further enhance the spirit of collegiality and cooperation between our faculty, our students and our community."

At USUHS, Mannix created the US Military Cancer Institute (USMCI), the first ever military-wide plan for a National Cancer Institute (NCI) designated comprehensive cancer treatment and research program. He also initiated the cooperative research and development program at USUHS, resulting in expanded medical research and development opportunities to enhance funding.

"Good teaching and research go hand and hand with service to the community we serve," said Mannix. "I look forward to building on Dartmouth Medical School's strong relationship with the community and working with the professionals that make DMS a world-class institution. There is no reason why the lessons we learn in Northern New England cannot serve as a model for the nation."

Mannix holds academic appointments as associate professor of clinical jurisprudence and assistant professor of preventive medicine and biometrics and military medicine at the USUHS. A member of the adjunct faculty at Georgetown University's paralegal program he holds the rank of colonel in the United States Air Force Reserves. Mannix earned his undergraduate, master of arts and law degrees from Duquesne University and his master in public administration degree from Harvard University.

"I really feel there is an excitement in the air that the collaborative efforts at Dartmouth are about to yield even more fruitful enterprises which will serve the root of the Dartmouth mission, which in my opinion, is to make the world a better place," said Mannix.
