Media Advisory: Mural Unveiling

HANOVER, NH - The media is invited to cover the unveiling of three mural-sized paintings of historical achievements at Dartmouth Medical School on Friday, June 11 at 5:30 p.m. The murals, each depicting a defining moment for DMS, were painted by medical student Joseph Dwaihy and his partner Sara Dykstra, a professional artist who has exhibited her work around the world. This is the only chance to view the works before they are hung at DMS and DHMC.

What: Unveiling of three large paintings depicting historic moments at DMS.

When: 5:30 p.m. Friday June 11.

Where: The front lawn of DMS, Derzon Courtyard. (In case of rain, Kellogg Auditorium.)

DMS Dean Stephen P. Spielberg will offer opening remarks and recognize the artists. A reception will follow the unveiling and the artists and faculty will be available for comment.

Measuring 6 feet by 8 feet, the three canvases depict three centuries of medicine at DMS. The first portrays DMS founder Nathan Smith riding on horseback to visit a patient in rural Vermont with medical students in tow, circa 1799. Another illustrates the first x-ray performed in the United States in 1886, and a third shows the country's first Intensive Care Unit (ICU), established by Dr. William Mosenthal in 1955.

The mural-sized paintings represent more than a year of effort and are part of a student-led effort to beautify the campus of DMS and signify the rich history of the fourth oldest medical school in the U.S.

Please contact Andy Nordhoff at MedNews@Dartmouth.edu if you plan to attend and if you have any questions.
