DMS Graduates Honored

HANOVER, NH - Former US Surgeon General David Satcher, MD, PhD, delivered the keynote address today, June 7, at Dartmouth Medical School's 2003 class day and awards ceremony. He discussed the importance working toward erasing the disparities in health among different racial and ethnic groups in America. Also speaking were graduating medical student Seth David Crockett and graduate student Neema Ganju, who received a PhD in pharmacology and toxicology.

The celebration recognized 138 DMS students who are among approximately 1,500 awarded degrees at Dartmouth College's Commencement ceremonies (Sunday June 8). Thirty-two students were the first to receive a master's of public health from DMS. Sixty received an MD, 22 received a PhD, and one received a master's in the life sciences. Twenty-three students received degrees in the evaluative clinical sciences; 3 PhDs and 20 master's of science.

Ethan Dmitrovsky, MD, acting dean and David Niremberg, MD, senior associate dean for medical education, presented student honors. The Dean's Medal for best overall medical student achievement was awarded to Adrienne Page Williams. The John W. Strohbehn Medal for Excellence in Biomedical Research was presented to Thomas Joseph Kirn, Jr. The new Dartmouth Medical Student physicians will continue their training in generalist and specialty areas across the nation; 21 will remain in New England, including six at the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center.
