National Honor for Dartmouth Pioneer in Reducing Medical Errors

Hanover, NH - DMS pediatrician, Paul B. Batalden, M.D., an early proponent of seeking ways to reduce medical errors, received the second annual Alfred I. duPont Award for Excellence in Children's Health Care for his landmark efforts in developing innovative, safe, high quality systems of care in the United States.

The award was presented by Nemours, a national pediatric health care provider organization, September 24, in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida.

Batalden, professor of pediatrics and of community and family medicine, through his knowledge and leadership, laid the groundwork for much of the work for the improvement of health care systems that has resulted in cost effective, patient-centered quality care both nationally and internationally.

Batalden said, "Mr. duPont once observed, (that) 'it is the duty of everyone in the world to do what is within his power to alleviate human suffering,' and I deeply agree, but am humbled by the recognition of this award, and am deeply honored. I've spent my professional life curious about what health professionals can contribute to the reduction of illness burden and the improvement of health, and I have a consuming interest in the improvement and redesign of 'front- line' patient care.

"My hope for the future of pediatric health care is that we will recognize the importance of understanding and improving the small living systems where children, families and health care meet, and the challenges of forming health professionals, particularly the practical wisdom that comes from integrating cognitive knowledge, technical skill, and values ... at a time like this. Through this recognition, it is my hope that others who share these concerns will be energized, encouraged and make connections with each other."

The award was established to honor duPont's legacy of care. "Alfred I. duPont, benefactor of the Nemours Foundation, was creative but exacting -- seeking for himself and inspiring others to achieve excellence. This award is intended to promote continuing improvement in the care of children by recognizing annually, an individual who has made significant contributions to quality of care. Nemours is proud to recognize Dr. Paul Batalden," said W. T. Thompson III, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Nemours.
