Cancer Biologist to Kick Off New Medical School Lecture Series

Hanover, NH - Dartmouth Medical School inaugurates a distinguished lecture series that opens Oct. 11 with noted cancer biologist and Dartmouth alumnus Craig B. Thompson, MD, of the University Pennsylvania.

Thomspson, scientific director of the Abramson Family Cancer Research Institute at the University of Pennsylvania Cancer Center, focuses on the role of genes that regulate programmed cell death (apoptosis). His lecture, "Apoptosis: How is it Regulated and Does it Really Contribute to Degenerative Diseases and Cancer?" begins at 12:15 p.m. in Chilcott auditorium. A reception will be held 5-6 p.m. in the DMS Admissions Lounge. Both events are open to the Dartmouth community.

Acting Dean Ethan Dmitrovsky, MD, initiated the series to bring leading physicians and scientists to campus. Thompson received his undergraduate degree from Dartmouth College in 1974 and after studying at DMS 1973-75, earned his M.D. degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1977. He was recently appointed chair of the Howard Hughes Medical Advisory Board.

Following clinical training in internal medicine at Harvard University and in medical oncology the University of Washington, Thompson served on the faculties of the University of Michigan and the University of Chicago where he as also an HHMI investigator, until assuming his post at Pennsylvania in 1999.
