Description: An introduction to the acute care aspects of General Surgery with a focus upon: emergency surgery, trauma, critical surgical illness, and with less emphasis on elective surgery. Emphasis is placed upon inpatients, especially those with critical illness. The opportunity exists for exposure to the evaluation of an acute surgical patient in the ER or hospital setting, diagnostic workup, definitive care in the OR and post-operative management until discharge. The primary learning objectives of the surgical clerkship are practiced on a daily basis; ICU care and ER evaluations are an integral part of this rotation.

Dress Code: During the week attire should be a clean white coat, tie and professional clothing. During the evening and weekend hours, more casual dress is acceptable.
Equipment/Texts: "Essentials of General Surgery" by Laserence will be prorided as required reqding for didactic studies. It is recommended to read 20 pages per night during the Surgery Clerkship rotations.
Students are encouraged to review an ATLS Manual and consider the "Clinical Handbook for Surgical Critical Care" by K. Burchard, D. Gann and C. Wiles.
