Description: A full range of general surgery as well as surgical endoscopy (upper endoscopy and colonoscopy) in an outpatient setting. Students on this rotation will largely be working with DHMC general surgeon attendings in their community practice in a one-on-one fashion. The emphasis will be on evaluating outpatients with common general surgical conditions in the clinic setting as well as scrubbing and first assisting surgical attendings on common same-day general surgical procedures. patient population is a diverse group of patients spanning from occasional pediatric patients to geriatric patient population. There is relatively little emergency work and no trauma, therefore, night call will be accomplished at DHMC.

Subspecialty Activities: If desired, time can be spent either with orthopaedic (APD) and ophthalmology staff (MAH).

Didactics: Weekly on Wednesdays at DHMC with all Surgery Clerkship students

Call Schedule:

Two weekday nights, two weekend nights, no call on Tuesday to study for Wednesday didactics

DHMC: GSM on-call rooms overseen by the Office of Clinical Education. Instructions for room sign-up posted in on-call area.

Population: Primary catchment area of APD, MAH, as well as some DHMC general surgery clinic NH, VT (40,000)

No. of Patient:

Patient Encounters: Aim is for 10-15 total patient encounters per week
Clinics - 5-10 patients per week (2.5 clinics per week)
Operating Room - 5-10 patients per week (2.5 OR days per week)

Patient Census: Essentially no inpatient responsibilities with very few exceptions (occasional opportunity to evaluate ER patients that general surgery is consulted on during office hours).

Dress Code: During the week attire should be a clean white coat, tie and professional dress. During the evening and weekend hours, more casual dress is acceptable.

Equipment/Texts: "Essentials of General Surgery" by Lawrence will be provided as required reading for didactic studies. It is recommended to read 20 pager per night during the Surgery Clerkship rotations.
