Description: Students will have exposure to a broad range of operations performed with minimal access techniques (laparoscopy). Our patients are often cared for in a multidisciplinary way with frequent interaction with other specialties such as gastroenterology, radiology and nutrition. Our team includes a Minimally Invasive Surgery fellow, junior resident, and physician assistant. Our bariatric surgery team also includes a nurse practitioner and clinical director as well as a registered dietician. Conditions commonly seen on our service include GERD, morbid obesity, gallstones, abdominal and groin hernia, splenic and adrenal disease, colon surgery and a number of less common conditions. Students will also have the opportunity to see flexible endoscopy procedures. Students are expected to spend a half day in clinic per week which should include clinic time with each of the three attending surgeons over the course of the rotation. There is an opportunity to observe a Shared Medical Appointment for bariatric surgery in the clinic. Students on the Minimally Invasive Surgery Service are able to observe advanced laparoscopic abdominal surgeries on a wide screen with high definition imaging - this is the same view that the attending and resident surgeons have which can be advantageous when compared to standing at the foot of the operating table for open procedures. Because of the shorter recovery and decreased inflammation associated with laparoscopic surgery, the hospital stay for our patients is generally short (1-2 days). This rotation may be of particular interest to learners who have an interest in technology and engineering, gastroenterology and benign gastrointestinal disease, and obesity.
