Academic Summary:

Psychiatry is a required 6 week clerkship completed by most students in Year 3.

Clinical Overview:

Students are assigned to longitudinal treatment teams which involve inpatient, some consultation-liaison, and outpatient treatment ( adjusted due to COVID-19). Students take call both on weekday evenings and potentially weekend days.

Approximately 1 in 4 patients seen by non-psychiatric physicians have significant psychiatric illness or stress related to their medical disorder. Hence, it is essential for all doctors to be able to identify, understand and effectively manage this clinical care.

Evaluation:

***The official, most up to date details of this clerkship's grading and evaluation practices are located on the course CANVAS page per Geisel Policy.***

Students are evaluated in the following areas, clinical performance, critical thinking, written clinical assignments and medical knowledge using the NBME psychiatry ‘shelf’ exam. Students will receive regular informal feedback (formative) throughout the clerkship, with formal (summative) evaluation, using the Geisel competencies, at the end of the clerkship. The student’s primary attending is responsible for compiling and communicating all formative and summative feedback to the student, including the final evaluation. This final grade is combined with other student assignments (write-ups, reflections, etc.) and the NBME performance to comprise the final grade.
Grading breakdown for each element is available on CANVAS.

Current grading is Pass/High Pass/Honors
