I. Introduction of New Liaison Committee for Medical Education (LCME) Standards.

  • a. Dave reported on the new LCME standards put forth at the recent AAMC Conference and how they relate to MEC and the upcoming (AY Õ04-Õ05) reassessment for accreditation:
    • 1. Due to timing, DMS will be the first to be asked to conform to new standards;
    • 2. The accreditation process will begin with a self-assessment and report and end with a site visit (scheduled for Mar./Apr. Õ05);
    • 3. The optimum possible result of the reassessment would be seven years of accreditation;
    • 4. The worst possible result would be probation with a limited time to attain compliance with standards.
  • b. Dave reported that because of the Med. Ed. committeesÕ early start in assessing the core competencies, and inclusion of said competencies in the new DMEDS program, DMS already has systems in place for self-assessment.
  • c. Dave presented a PowerPoint slide show (Attached) that mapped out the the new LCME standards, with special emphasis on the ones that directly effect MEC. He presented a status report on which of the competencies he believed DMS had achieved less than optimum performance on, and opened the floor to questions and discussion.
  • d. Dave suggested that all LCME requirements in all categories can be viewed at http://www.LCME.org.

II. Agenda for next MEC meeting on January 20, 2004, 758W Borwell, 4 pm:

Competencies Ð for curricular improvement and compliance with LCME standards.
