  • Review of Year II SBM Nutrition Course
    • Dave Nierenberg presented a report indicating student dissatisfaction with the Year II SBM Nutrition Course based on the following [Attachment A (word) (pdf)]:
      • AY2003-04 Student Course Evaluation, and
      • An independent student survey conducted by Nicholas Osborne, DMS IV
    • Dave announced that, due in part to the continuing student concerns about the course and her frustration at not being able to lessen student concerns, the course director resigned as of three days before the meeting.
    • Dave opened the floor to discussion of the problems and solicited recommendations for improvement. Some of the suggestions are as follows:
      • Recruit a new course director who is also committed and knowledgable;
      • Interface with Dartmouth College's Dietetics department to tap into their expertise;
      • Reduce dry and difficult details in presentations and create a course that's an overview and introduction to nutrition;
      • Make the course more problem and case-based;
      • Possibly include detailed info, i.e., vitamins and other dietary supplements, into other pertinent courses;
      • Try to adjust timing of the course so that it is not hampered by concerns over boards and entrance into clerkships;
      • Explore computer and on-line resources for curriculum;
      • Eliminate busy work; and
      • Make the course more clinical-based.
  • Introduction of AAMC Deans' Report
    • Dave handed out and introduced a report commissioned for the AAMC Institute for Improving Medical Education, a white paper titled "Educating Doctors to Provide High Quality Medical Care." (Copies available by request from Joyce Wagner or here.) He requested that the MEC membership read the report in preparation for discussion at the November meeting.
  • Agenda for the November 23 MEC Meeting
    • Discussion of the AAMC Deans' report;
    • Review of the Dermatology course for use as a guideline for a successfully run course;
    • Review of the On Doctoring course to determine problems and solutions;
    • Report on the October Course and Clerkship Directors workshops.
