I. Report on Professionalism VIG:

Joe O'Donnell reported on the Professionalism VIG, elaborating on the handout previously distributed and Todd Burdette spoke about the Professionalism website that is part of the Professionalism initiative. The floor was then opened for questions. The following are points made regarding the website:

  • a. It sits on the HSP course website, but could be moved to a better location, i.e., the DMS website;
  • b. It consists of a grid of four columns and seven rows, a breakdown of the seven categories of professionalism and how they relate to each or the four medical school years; and
  • c. Todd expressed desire that each level's information be presented to students at the beginning of each academic year.

The floor was opened for discussion. The following issues were raised:

  • a. The standards for professionalism for DMS students have been established and listed at DMS' website. Those established by the VIG on Professionalism should be in sync with those;
  • b. There is some discrepancy between the report and the information on the student created website, i.e.; Primacy of Patient Welfare is included in the VIG report but not on the website;
  • c. Other examples were suggested for the website, i.e., Acknowledge limitations to teachers and colleagues; Learn to be a colleague;
  • d. The VIG report needs to be condensed for a final version - one that would endure over the next four years;
  • e. Seven categories of professional attributes would be optimum and should guide the information on the website grid; and
  • f. Within the next three weeks, Todd and Joe will develop the seven attributes and examples and forward the information to MEC members for feedback.

II. Agenda for AY'05:

Dave opened the floor for suggestions for the MEC agenda for the next academic year. The following were suggested:

  • a. The final report of the Professionalism VIG;
  • b. The final report of the LCME Workgroup;
  • c. The role of MEC in the accreditation process;
  • d. Tracking and feedback on the DMEDS program;
  • e. A reexamination of the electives program;
  • f. A reexamination of the clerkships;
  • g. An update on the ICE scores; and
  • h. A report on how the program of mandated laptops for med. students is working.
