  • LCME Re-Accreditation

    Dave Nierenberg reported that representatives of the LCME would be arriving for a site visit on Monday, April 4. He stated that the Self-Study has been completed and sent, then outlined the agenda for the visit, specifically elaborating on the events that impact or are impacted by MEC. [See A1 - LCME Schedule (excel) (pdf)]

  • Discussion of On Doctoring Courses
    • Dave Nierenberg updated the membership on the status of the two OD courses using the following research and data, and concluded that these courses were good courses that could, with the help of the leadership of the course directors and constructive criticism from the MEC, become great courses:
      • Updated results of survey of Year 3 clerkship directors for AY'05 (see A2) regarding readiness of Year 2 students to enter clerkships in Year 3; and
      • Results an identical survey given to Year 4 students.
    • Dave Nierenberg opened the floor to discussion. The following challenges were explored:
      • Subjects that are deemed pertinent to medical education but don't fit into specific classes are frequently "dumped" into On Doctoring resulting in students often considering the course a "throw-away";
      • Much of the clinical skills instruction takes place in preceptors' offices, making it difficult to track what works or doesn't work and why;
      • Certain concepts need to be taught before procedures. Students often don't understand the connections and believe the conceptual subjects are superfluous;
      • Students perceive course expectations as "blurry;" and
      • Could the course be completely rethought?
    • Dave handed out copies of second drafts of the On Doctoring Progress Report (see A3) that will be presented to the LCME and requested feedback. Items discussed include:
      • Include OSCE scores in specific areas;
      • Could the recommendations include pruning of specific subjects?
    • Dave Nierenberg thanked the membership for their input and proposed to incorporate some of the ideas into the final draft of the summary. He also proposed that the discussion of On Doctoring be completed at the April meeting.
  • Teaching of Abortion Procedures at DMS

    Students Brett Chevalier and Autumn Davidson attended in order to present a petition regarding the teaching of abortion procedures. The presentation and discussion were tabled and rescheduled for the April meeting.

Agenda for April 19 meeting

  • Report on LCME site visit;
  • Continuation of discussion regarding On Doctoring courses;
  • Presentation and discussion of student petition.
