Cannabis Research

The Institute provides a home at Dartmouth for researchers who focus on behavior and non-communicable diseases. We conduct research that has a measurable impact on the risk of these diseases.

Cannabis (aka marijuana) -- Over the past decade, the prevalence and frequency of cannabis use has increased along with an explosion of new cannabis products available to the public.  Confusion, debate, and controversy related to the potential for cannabis use to cause harm, or alternatively to provide therapeutic benefit continues globally.  Escalation of (a) the decriminalization and legalization of cannabis and cannabinoid products, (b) the perception that cannabis has therapeutic potential for a numerous and diverse set of disorders, and (c) a burgeoning and lucrative cannabis industry has increased the importance and urgency of gaining a better understanding of the impact of cannabis on public health and the development of a regulatory system that can best mitigate harm.  Koop Institute investigators are involved in diverse areas of cannabis research, including: trials of novel interventions, development of tools to measure cannabis consumption, determining associations between use patterns and consequences, evaluation of cannabis policy on cannabis consumption and consequences, and prevalence and consequences of cannabis use. Koop faculty also routinely participate in educational activities to provide the most up to date information related to cannabis and its effects to youth, parents, students, health care professionals, policymakers, and the public.
