Steven L. Bernstein, MD, Director

Professor of Emergency Medicine

Dr. Bernstein is the inaugural Chief Research Officer at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center and the Senior Associate Dean of Clinical & Translational Research at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth. His work focuses on the implementation of tobacco dependence treatment in various clinical settings. Dr. Bernstein pioneered the development of tobacco dependence treatment interventions in the emergency department. His work has been supported by the National Cancer Institute, National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, National Institute on Drug Abuse, Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and the American Legacy Foundation, among others. Dr. Bernstein has served in an advisory capacity developing tobacco policies and measures for national groups including the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the Joint Commission, and the National Committee for Quality Assurance. He has served on multiple advisory panels for tobacco research and policy for the National Cancer Institute.

Susanne E. Tanski, MD, MPH, Associate Director

Associate Professor of Pediatrics

Susanne Tanski is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth and a practicing primary care pediatrician at the Children’s Hospital at Dartmouth. Working within the Cancer Risk Behaviors Group at the Norris Cotton Cancer Center at Dartmouth, her current research includes a focus on visual media influences on adolescent drinking and smoking.

Diane Dart Med

Diane Gilbert-Diamond, ScD, Associate Director

Assistant Professor of Epidemiology

Diane Gilbert-Diamond trained in Biology at Dartmouth College and in Nutritional Epidemiology at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Her research focuses on how genetic and prenatal exposures predispose children to unhealthy weight gain in our current obesogenic environment. Through a series of studies she has found compelling evidence that food advertising increases caloric consumption in children and that some children are predisposed to overeating when they watch food ads. Mitch Zeller, JD

Former Director, Center for Tobacco Products, Food and Drug Administration

Mitch Zeller, J.D. retired from federal service in April 2022. He was the director of the FDA's Center for Tobacco Products from March 2013 through April 2022. As Center Director, Zeller led FDA's efforts to use the tools of product regulation to reduce disease and death from tobacco use and bring previously unavailable information about its dangers to light. He created a comprehensive regulatory program encompassing application review, innovative regulatory policy, compliance and enforcement, public education, and regulatory science research. Zeller, a graduate of Dartmouth College and the American University Washington College of Law, worked on FDA issues from 1982 until his retirement in 2022.
