Artificial intelligence tools are already available to the entire Geisel community - including Claude, Microsoft Copilot, and Google Gemini - yet the many faculty, staff, and students have not had meaningful opportunities to explore or adopt them. The Geisel AI Network (GAIN) Executive Steering Committee is changing that.
GAIN is launching a structured, school-wide AI foundations initiative designed to meet people where they are: no prior technical experience required. The initiative is organized around a simple progression framework and will develop alongside our community’s needs.
What’s Launching
AI Readiness Survey
For GAIN to meet our community needs, a Dartmouth Campus AI Survey has been developed and will be launched shortly for Geisel as well as other Dartmouth schools. Watch your inbox this week for the survey from Geisel.AI.Network@dartmouth.edu.
The survey is designed for all faculty and staff, and will assess current awareness, use, and interest in AI tools. We hope for at least 80% participation rate in order to obtain representative information on current AI uses and aspirations for the future, results will be used to shape the content and priorities of GAIN activities. The survey will be re-administered periodically to track changes in AI uses over time.
Introductory AI Summer Classes
A 4-session monthly course series - already underway - provides a foundational introduction to large language models (LLMs): what they are, how they work, and what to watch out for. The course is designed for anyone curious about AI, regardless of technical background.

“Office Hours” with AI Guides
Have a specific question about how AI tools could help your work? Not sure where to start? GAIN is establishing weekly drop-in office hours where you can bring your questions - from the very basic to the surprisingly complex - and get direct, practical guidance.
Office hours will have technical representatives from Geisel IT (Steve McAllister, Brian Dellinger, and others) as well as strategic AI guidance (Nick Ryan), giving attendees access to both the “how it works” and “how to apply it” perspectives.

Why Now?
AI is changing so rapidly that the landscape of AI safety and opportunities keeps changing. The goal of GAIN is to give every person in Geisel the opportunity to use AI safely and effectively, using tools provided for the broader Dartmouth community.
