Transition in Leadership for Clinical Research

Dear Colleagues,

We want to share that Steven L. Bernstein, MD, chief research officer at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center and senior associate dean for clinical and translational research at the Geisel School of Medicine, has accepted a new leadership opportunity at Yale School of Medicine. He will be departing on July 17.

Since 2020, Steve has helped advance our research mission. Notably, under Steve’s leadership, Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center together with Dartmouth College and other collaborating institutions in Vermont and Maine secured a historic $27.7 million, seven-year National Institutes of Health Clinical and Translational Science Award to advance rural healthcare delivery.

Additionally, he serves as the director of the C. Everett Koop Institute and director and lead principal investigator of SYNERGY, the Dartmouth Clinical and Translational Science Institute. We are grateful for his leadership and many contributions to our academic and research community and wish him well on his return to Yale.

Interim Research Leader and National Search
To support continuity during this transition, Angelo E. Volandes, MD, MPH, vice chair of research for the department of medicine at Dartmouth Health and Geisel will serve as interim chief research officer at Dartmouth Health, as well as interim senior associate dean for clinical and translational research at Geisel.

Angelo joined Dartmouth Health and Geisel in 2024 from Massachusetts General Hospital, where among his many achievements he established a world-renowned research platform focused on leveraging a novel ethical and population health program. In his role as vice chair of research, he already works closely with research leaders, faculty and teams across the system.

At the same time, we will begin a national search for Dartmouth Health’s next chief research officer. This process will help us identify a leader who can build on our strong foundation and continue advancing our academic, research and clinical missions.

Research at Dartmouth Health
Each year, Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center and Geisel researchers and teams support and manage research funding basic science, clinical, translational, and population health research. This work advances discovery, expands access to innovative treatments and clinical trials, and strengthens our mission as an academic health system.

Research is central to who we are as an academic health system. Know that during this transition, we remain committed to supporting our investigators, research teams, learners and staff, and to continuing the important work happening across our organization every day.

Please join us in thanking Steve for his service and leadership, and in supporting Angelo during this transition.

Sincerely,

Steve D. Leach, MD
