Dear Colleagues:

We’re pleased to share that Arief A. Suriawinata, MD, FCAP, has been named chair of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Dartmouth Health and the Geisel School of Medicine, effective March 15.

The department supports nearly every patient encounter, providing laboratory testing and diagnostic expertise of blood, tissue and other samples that guide clinical decisions across the system.

Arief has served as interim chair since 2022. In that role, he has led the department through a period of continued growth and complexity, strengthening clinical operations, advancing the department’s research program and supporting care teams. Arief, who also holds the E. Elizabeth French Professorship at Geisel, has been a staunch advocate for his faculty and their role in the education of medical students.

A nationally recognized pathologist, Arief’s expertise spans gastrointestinal and liver pathology, clinical informatics and the application of artificial intelligence in diagnostic care. Before becoming interim chair, Arief served as section chief of Anatomic Pathology, a role which he served in since 2008. He joined Dartmouth Health and Geisel in 2003.

He earned his medical degree from the University of Indonesia, Jakarta, Indonesia, and completed his Anatomic and Clinical Pathology residency at The Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City, followed by fellowships in Oncologic Pathology and Gastrointestinal Oncologic Pathology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. He is board certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology and in Clinical Informatics. Arief is a Diplomate of the American Board of Pathology in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology, and in Clinical Informatics.
