The Mentoring Institute at Geisel

The Office of Faculty Affairs launched The Mentoring Institute at Geisel in February 2024! One of the major professional development requests we received from Geisel faculty members was to create a structured mentoring program. We are thrilled to have met this goal for the Geisel academic community. As the Office of Faculty Affairs has multiple professional development webpage portals, this one provides updates and critical resources to our mentoring pairs and groups, and to all Geisel faculty.

Reflecting on our individual career trajectories, we can fondly identify those who have provided, and continue to provide, support in achieving our professional goals and aspirations. Our academic community cannot flourish without a culture of mentorship, and The Mentoring Institute at Geisel will enhance this aspect. It also aims to achieve the following goals and expected outcomes for both faculty and the Geisel community, at large:

  • Goal 1. Professional Development: Enhance the skills, knowledge, and career growth of mentored faculty through guidance and support from experienced and more senior faculty mentors.
    • Outcome 1. Enhanced Skills and Competencies: Mentored faculty develop new skills and improve existing ones, leading to better job performance. This is also an outcome for the mentor, as well.
  • Goal 2. Leadership Development: Cultivate leadership qualities in mentored faculty, preparing them for future leadership roles internal and external to the organization.
    • Outcome 2. Stronger Leadership Pipeline: Institutions and organizations build a robust pipeline of mentees who are well-prepared to take on leadership roles.
  • Goal 3. Employee Engagement: Increase faculty engagement and career satisfaction by fostering meaningful connections and a supportive academic environment.
    • Outcome 3. Increased Career Satisfaction: Mentored faculty feel more valued and invested in, which boosts their morale and career satisfaction.
  • Goal 4a. Recruitment: Increase attraction of the best faculty candidates by enhancing the onboarding and transition experience and through positive testimonials and creation of strong professional networks within the organization.
  • Goal 4b. Retention: Improve faculty retention rates by providing career development opportunities and a sense of belonging.
    • Outcome 4.  Improved Recruitment and Retention Rates: Institutions and organizations see an increase in successfully obtaining top faculty candidates and a decrease in turnover rates as faculty feel more supported and engaged, as a result of structured mentoring programs.
  • Goal 5. Knowledge Transfer and Team building: Facilitate the transfer of institutional knowledge and best practices from experienced and senior faculty to more junior faculty, resulting in stronger collegial relationships and teams.
    • Outcome 5. Better Communication and Collaboration: Mentoring relationships foster improved communication and collaboration across different levels of the institution and organization.

We have aligned the goals of The Mentoring Institute at Geisel with the broader objective of the mission of Geisel…to promote ONE GEISEL, LEADING FORWARD. Where both mentors and mentees can work towards achieving meaningful and impactful outcomes to support and uplift the Geisel Community.
