About

In the Dartmouth tradition of exemplary teaching and Liberal Education, the faculty and staff of the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth dedicate themselves to the training of compassionate clinicians who possess outstanding clinical skills, a deep understanding of the scientific basis of health and disease, and proficiency in delivering care within complex social and economic environments. Our faculty and staff are equally dedicated to making transformative discoveries that will reveal the scientific underpinnings of health, catalyze new and better treatments for disease, and lead to improvements in disease prevention, as well as being an international leader in health systems research and education. In both missions, we are committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive community of learning and discovery that pursues bold ideas and transcends traditional boundaries between disciplines.

More than 2,000 faculty, non-faculty academics and 700 staff comprise the Geisel School of Medicine.  Our diverse academic community is drawn not only from foundational and clinical departments and institutes within Dartmouth College and our three major clinical partners: Dartmouth-Hitchcock, the White River Junction Veterans Affairs Medical Center, and California Pacific Medical Center, but also from a cadre of dedicated community-based clinicians who provide education opportunities from Maine to Alaska.

Our faculty and staff provide the academic foundation for Geisel’s highly selective MD program, as well advanced degree programs in biomedical sciences, data science, healthcare delivery science, and public health. Their efforts are central to the success of a number of nationally recognized centers of excellence, including the Dartmouth Cancer Center, the nation's only rural NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center; The Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice; and leading programs in immunology, lung biology, genomic medicine, quantitative biology, and the study of environmental, behavioral, and social determinants of health.

Our faculty and staff's commitment to excellence in teaching and innovation in medical pedagogy has been recognized both externally by membership in the Robert D. and Patricia E. Kern Institute for the Transformation of Medical Education and internally by membership in the Geisel Academy of Master Educators and numerous other honors.  Geisel's excellence in research is highlighted by our faculty's representation through elected membership as fellows in national organizations, including the National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine; The American Association for Advancement of Science; National Academy of Inventors, Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, and  the American Academy of Microbiology.
