In March of the 2012/2013 Geisel academic year, four MS1 Geisel School of Medicine Scholars (Asha Clarke, Bianca Williams, Asha McClurg, and Evelyn Bae) visited the city of Chicago, the third largest city in the United States with a population of nearly three million people. Chicago is known for the rich diversity of its many neighborhoods.
The scholars had an action-packed week, and their travels included:
- Shadowing in a Cook County Level 1 Trauma Center and ER
- Volunteering at a local women's shelter on Chicago's South Side
- Teaching healthy eating habits (in English AND Spanish!) at a Community Health Clinic in the Ukranian Village
- Meeting with Dr. David Ansell himself, author of "County: Life, Death, and Politics at Chicago's Public Hospital" and a tireless advocate for better health care outcomes for the underserved.
