The AAMC will host a free webinar April 18 at 12 p.m. ET, “A Behind-the-Scenes Look at Peer Review: Insights from Editors and Reviewer.” Speakers who hold roles as editors and reviewers will present an overview of the peer-review process, provide practical advice on how to conduct a meaningful peer review, and give insights into writing reviewer comments that will be both useful to editors and actionable for authors. This session is part of a series, co-sponsored by the AAMC’s peer-reviewed journals Academic Medicine and MedEdPORTAL, that covers the importance of publishing education scholarship and practical suggestions for how to do so successfully.

AAMC statement on medical school curriculum
AAMC President and CEO David J. Skorton, MD, and Chief Academic Officer Alison J. Whelan, MD, issued a statement on the development of medical school curricula. “The presence of diversity, equity, and inclusion in medical school curricula is intended to train the next generation of physicians to respond most appropriately to the rapidly diversifying populations that they will serve. Doing so increases the likelihood for better health care and healthy lives for all patients, including individuals who have been historically marginalized by the health care system.”

New AAMC report shows continuing projected physician shortage
According to a new report published by the AAMC, the United States will face a physician shortage of up to 86,000 physicians by 2036. “Given the new findings, it is clear that both sustained and increased investments in training new physicians are critical to mitigating projected shortfalls of doctors needed to meet the health care needs of our country,” said David J. Skorton, MD.

AAMC produces new infographic on value of NIH research at medical schools and teaching hospitals
The AAMC has developed a new infographic about the value of medical research funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The infographic highlights cancer and Alzheimer's statistics, promising clinical trials, and the economic impact of medical research, among other data highlights. The resource is designed to be used as a reference to affirm the importance of Congress’ continued steady investment in the NIH.

On the latest episode of “Beyond the White Coat,” AAMC President and CEO David J. Skorton, MD, talks with Allison Kessler, MD, MSc, and Lisa Meeks, PhD, MA, about why the number of disabled doctors continues to lag behind other underrepresented groups and what individuals and schools can do to help be more inclusive of those with disabilities. AAMC Center for Health Justice selects community partners to implement and evaluate Principles of Trustworthiness Toolkit
Following a call for applications to continue to center community wisdom and engagement and integrate local perspectives into continuous improvements of the Principles of Trustworthiness Toolkit, the AAMC Center for Health Justice will fund and support four multisector, community partnerships to formally use and evaluate the toolkit for one year. Beyond the initial one-year implementation and evaluation, the long-term improvement of the toolkit will help organizations foster gains in trust and trustworthiness by recognizing the knowledge and expertise in the community, taking meaningful actions, and sustaining ongoing engagement. The participating communities are: Atlanta (Morehouse School of Medicine Prevention Research Center); Alton, Illinois (Southern Illinois University School of Medicine); Omaha, Nebraska (University of Nebraska Medical Center and Creighton University); and Davis, California (Center for Reducing Health Disparities at UC Davis Health).

In Memoriam: William Henrich, MD
William Henrich, MD, president of UT Health San Antonio, died on March 14 at the age of 77. He served as president since 2009 and previously served as dean of the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine and vice president for medical affairs from 2006-2009.

AAMC seeks next editor-in-chief for MedEdPORTAL
The AAMC has launched a search for the next editor-in-chief of its peer-reviewed journal MedEdPORTAL. Established in 2004, MedEdPORTAL is a MEDLINE-indexed, open-access journal of teaching and learning resources in the health professions. Publications on MedEdPORTAL are stand-alone, complete teaching or learning modules that have been implemented and evaluated with physician trainees or practitioners. Interested candidates can submit their CV and a letter of interest through the online form. The deadline for applications is April 30.

The Spencer Foreman Award for Outstanding Community Engagement is presented to an AAMC-member medical school or teaching hospital with a long-standing, major institutional commitment to partnering with the community it serves to identify and address community needs.
