News & Actions from the AAMC Center for Health Justice: October 2023

In May 2023, the AAMC Center for Health Justice hosted the Maternal Health Equity Workshop: From Story to Data to Action, to explore how and whether available qualitative tools like natural language processing (NLP), which use machine learning to process and interpret qualitative data, can retain the wisdom of patient and community member stories as those stories are transformed into data. As a follow-up to the May workshop, the center has published the Foundations of Responsible NLP Use for Maternal Health Equity in collaboration with leading researchers in the field.

The foundations were developed as a comprehensive guide for those who use NLP as a research tool or as part of clinical decision support to include and center the voices, agency, and autonomy of women and birthing people in their work.

Vote to update Wellbeing in the Nation Network measures
The WIN Measures are community measures on a national scale that measure population and community health, well-being, and equity. These were chosen by local communities (including community residents with lived experience of racial and other inequities), community-based organizations, federal agencies, and national organizations representing most sectors that have an impact on health. Voting is open now for the updated set of community measures. Results will be announced in January 2024.

New coalition addresses health equity challenges through inclusive data collection
The AAMC Center for Health Justice has joined the National Minority Quality Forum, the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association, and 16 organizations as a member of the Data Equity Coalition. The coalition was formed to improve health outcomes through better, more accurate and more representative data on race, ethnicity and language, and sexual orientation and gender identity. Developing a standardized approach to this important data can be critical to ensuring everyone in America has an equal opportunity to attain their highest level of health.
