Submit Your Nominations for the Herbert W. Nickens Award

The Herbert W. Nickens Award is given to an individual who has made outstanding contributions to promoting justice in medical education and health care equity in the United States.

Nickens Award recipients come from a wide range of fields including medicine, dentistry, education, law, nursing, pharmacy, public health, and social and behavioral sciences. Learn more about the criteria on which nominees will be evaluated.

The awardee receives the Nickens Award and a $10,000 prize. The awardee will also present the Nickens Lecture at Learn Serve Lead 2023: The AAMC Annual Meeting in Seattle, WA, in November.

Thomas A. LaVeist, PhD, is the 2022 Herbert W. Nickens Award recipient. Dr. LaVeist is the dean and Weatherhead Presidential Chair in Health Equity at the School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine at Tulane University where he has devoted 30 years to dismantling racism, promoting social justice, and fighting for equity in health care.
