2023 Restorative Justice in Academic Medicine (RJAM) Facilitator Training
Wednesday, February 22 - Friday, February 24, 2023
AAMC Learning Center
Washington, DC

Join us for this in-person event where we will provide guidance to effectively incorporate the practice of Restorative Justice (RJ) in addressing harm at medical schools, teaching hospitals, and allied health professional institutions.

The meeting will start with a virtual welcome and orientation on January 27, 2023, 1:30 – 4:00 pm ET where we will meet your trainers and become familiar with fellow participants and basic RJ information. In the weeks leading up to the in-person 2023 Restorative Justice in Academic Medicine (RJAM) Facilitator Training, you will participate in asynchronous learning that will help you be ready to fully engage on Wednesday, February 22 - Friday, February 24 at the AAMC Learning Center in Washington, DC.

What to Expect
This collaborative training with the AAMC and the University of San Diego Center for Restorative Justice, is designed to support faculty and staff in academic medicine centers in facilitating community building circles and implementing strategic restorative responses to harm.

Participants can expect to:

  • Provide response to the RJAM Virtual Community outreach email
  • Experience multiple  community-building circles and learn about the philosophies, practices, and principles of this important process for building trust, repairing harms, and reintroducing previously separated members back to communities
  • Design and practice facilitating circles to support your institutional community-building goals

Experience and practice restorative responses to harm or conflict that will help individuals and communities restore trust and repair harm

Who Should Attend?

This program welcomes faculty and staff from medical schools, teaching hospitals, and allied health professionals who would like to learn a relational framework that can help them navigate difficult issues (e.g., academic integrity, campus climate, Title IX, DEI, misconduct), and how to respond to instances of individual or communal harm in ways that support active accountability, deeper understanding, shared decision making, and the prevention of future harms. Additionally, this workshop will help practitioners develop the skills to create more supportive, inclusive, and resilient learning communities while fostering a sense of belonging for all stakeholders. Participants should consider institutional commitment from senior leadership to implement Restorative Justice practices.
