ABEM Press Release: Dr. Lynne Holden Elected to Board of Directors
The American Board of Emergency (ABEM) has elected Lynne Holden, M.D., to its Board of Directors. She is a professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine and Senior Associate Dean for Diversity and Inclusion at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York, New York. When Dr. Holden obtained full professorship in Emergency Medicine in 2018, she was just the fifth African American woman in the U.S. to achieve that position. She teaches and practices clinically at the Montefiore Hospital System-Moses Division. Read more about Dr. Holden and her achievements here. 

Restorative Justice in Academic Medicine (RJAM) Facilitator Training
This in-person program welcomes faculty and staff from medical schools, teaching hospitals, and allied health professionals who would like to learn a relational framework that can help them navigate difficult issues (e.g., academic integrity, campus climate, Title IX, DEI, misconduct). They will also learn how to respond to instances of individual or communal harm in ways that support active accountability, deeper understanding, shared decision making, and the prevention of future harms. Additionally, this workshop will help practitioners develop the skills to create more supportive, inclusive, and resilient learning communities while fostering a sense of belonging for all stakeholders. The training is scheduled for February 22 – 24, 2023 at AAMC Headquarters in Washington, DC.

New “Academic Medicine Podcast” episode on writing effectively and navigating the publication process
The editors of Academic Medicine share their advice for authors submitting their scholarship for publication and describe what they look for when reviewing submissions. The editors offer suggestions to help authors write effectively and publish their scholarship, including guidance that can apply to other types of medical education scholarship, scholarly publishing in other disciplines, and submissions to other journals and publications. AAMC statement on year-end legislation 
AAMC President and CEO David J. Skorton, MD, and Chief Public Policy Officer Danielle Turnipseed, JD, MHSA, MPP, issued a statement upon the release of text for the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2023, that would fund the federal government through fiscal year 2023. The legislative package contains provisions that will support patients, learners, scientists, teaching hospitals, faculty physicians, and other health care providers, including funding for the National Institutes of Health and Health Resources and Services Administration workforce programs and provisions that will expand funding for Medicare-supported graduate medical education, among other priorities.

Leadership plenary addresses from Learn Serve Lead 2022: The AAMC Annual Meeting
Transcripts of the leadership plenary addresses that were delivered during Learn Serve Lead 2022 by AAMC Board Chair Kirk A. Calhoun, MD, and AAMC President and CEO David J. Skorton, MD, have been published. While lauding academic medicine’s extraordinary response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Skorton identifies four problems that still plague the nation’s health care system but are within the power of academic medicine to address. During the chair’s address, Calhoun spoke about the goal of having medical school graduates reflect our communities as an important component of the AAMC strategic plan.

AAMC awards nomination deadline approaching
The AAMC annually recognizes and celebrates members of the academic medicine community who make significant advances in medical education, patient care, research, community engagement, and diversity in health care. There is still time to submit nominations for the AAMC Award for Excellence in Medical Education; the Award for Distinguished Research in the Biomedical Sciences, and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation David E. Rogers Award, as the deadline for these awards is Jan. 27 at 11:59 p.m. ET. These tips and a recent webinar offer guidance on preparing a compelling nomination.

AAMC welcomes new cohort of MOSAIC Scholars
The AAMC welcomes 18 postdoctoral researchers to its 2022 cohort of the AAMC Career Development Program for Maximizing Opportunities for Scientific and Academic Independent Careers (MOSAIC) scholars. MOSAIC is a National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded program to facilitate the transition of promising postdoctoral researchers from diverse backgrounds into new careers as independent faculty members at research-intensive institutions. The newest cohort joins the eight 2021 cohort scholars. The NIH accepts applications from postdoctoral researchers for the MOSAIC program three times per year, and applications for the next cycle are due on Feb. 12, 2023.
